LoCAL Next Week

We’re shipping out the truck and jet setting across the states to road trip California’s dreamy coastline. Shred sticks, half broken harmonica, and a flask are in the pack, not to mention our friends are skipping the week before finals to be grungy surf rats with us. First destination is the Sun Bum® Spyder Surf Festival in Hermosa Beach on Saturday, April 9th. Be there, or be… well, somewhere else… but we’ll be there to greet the West Coast with a fat smile.
From there it’s south. If we’re in your neighborhood, hit us up, let’s paddle out, have a bonfire, get some drinks, brown out together, whatever… shoot an email over or post a comment DOODZ.

Living It Up

Our way of life includes an endless array of sunshine, a cold drink in one hand and the constant echo of a friend’s laugh. Most would willing admit that our lifestyle, along the salt filled air of a beautiful coast is undoubtedly the best way to live and its true. Seriously who wants to challenge that?

Live and Love in the Sun.

However with this unreal reality that we call island life, is the shitty statistic of one in five friends getting skin cancer. Thats the bummer but were trying to do something about it. So as much as we say “Hey, how great is our way of life,” we also ask that our friends consider being safe. If you’ve only got money for a hotdog at least wear a long sleeve tee so your skin doesn’t fry like your lunch, Ya’ hear! Or check out our swag but its whatever, just be safe.

We had an ah-mazing time hanging out at the Super Girl Pro this weekend in Oceanside.  Sun Bum joined forces with Oneill Womens and B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer, an organization to help promote early detection of breast cancer) to have the coolest booth set up on the beach.

The three day event flew by as we hung out with some of the worlds top professional female surfers, including Sun Bum Ambassador and one of the raddest chics ever, Malia Manuel.

The event had over 70,000 attendees and was stock full of surf films, live bands, food trucks, an all girl skate competition and a beer garden.

Sun Bum alone raised over $600 for B4BC, and most of the competitor winnings were donated to charity.

Although we were rooting for our girl Malia, Tatiana Weston-Webb wound up taking the cake in the finals.
After her heat she was hoisted up per tradition onto the shoulders of friends and family and carried up the beach to receive the super girl cape.  Congrats, Tatiana!

Every year tens of thousands swarm to Huntington Beach, more specifically the corner of Main Street and PCH, for the Van’s U.S. Open of Surfing. This year we decided to join the churro eating circus to support some of our team riders like Malia Manuel, Noa Mizuno, Bailey Nagy, Rasmus King and Tiare Thompson. Julian Wilson, understandably sat this one out, resting up for the Billabong Pro later this month in Tahiti.

The weather conditions for the fans was perfect. The cloudless skies, bikini temperatures, and no wind meant the waves were on the small side, which sucked, but as always, our team represented well both on and off the waves. In the end, though, it was Hiroto Ohhara, from Japan, 18, winning the men’s side, and Johanne Defay, from France, 21, taking it for the girls.

Big thanks to Van’s for hooking us up in their beach shops this year, Oneil and B4BC for the extra love and fun, and the nameless HB police officers for not ticketing/arresting me for Sonny stickering the pier. XO, SB

We’ve kept our eyes peeled every day, and finally last Wednesday, the first Northeast Winter swell showed itself. We quickly phoned up the Florida crew and decided to post up for a good ol’ Sonny Session. The waves were shoulder high for most and over head for the always frothing squad of micro-groms. In between […]
